First look at Newark Liberty International Airport’s new $1.4B terminal

“Newark Liberty International Airport will join LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports in welcoming new major upgrades in the coming years. Grimshaw Architects has announced that it has been tapped to design a 33-gate Terminal One that will replace the existing Terminal A, the airport’s oldest terminal. The new terminal will be built on a site just south of the existing terminal.”

Terminal One, after renovations, will be equipped to handle 13.6 million annual travelers by the year 2027. The terminal will still be under construction, but operational by late 2021. Design plans show the terminal will be expandable to a 45-gate configuration.

Other plans for Terminal One include increasing its size to 1 million square feet and building a pedestrian bridge to link the EWR AirTrain to a new parking garage.
